Altesino is a winery located in the Montalcino region of Tuscany, Italy. The winery's history is closely tied to the development of the Brunello di Montalcino wine appellation.
Altesino was founded in the 19th century, when local farmers in Montalcino began experimenting with a grape variety known as "Brunello" or "Brunellino" - a close relative of Sangiovese. These early efforts laid the groundwork for the Brunello di Montalcino wine region, which is now one of Italy's most prestigious wine appellations.
Today, Altesino's vineyards cover approximately 100 hectares, with 50 hectares dedicated to viticulture. The estate's vineyards are spread across 6 distinct parcels located in different parts of the Montalcino region. These include vineyards in the northern Altesino and Macina areas, as well as the renowned Montosoli and Cerbaia vineyards in the northwest and the Pianezzine and Velona estates in the south.
In addition to Sangiovese, which is the primary grape used in Altesino's renowned Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino, and Palazzo d'Altesi wines, the winery also cultivates other grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Trebbiano, Malvasia, Vermentino, Chardonnay, and Viognier. This diverse cultivation allows Altesino to explore the full potential of the Montalcino terroir and produce innovative blended wines like the Alte d'Altesi and Rosso di Toscana.
Throughout its history, Altesino has remained committed to the classic Brunello di Montalcino style and producing high-quality wines, cementing the winery's reputation as a leading producer in the Montalcino wine region.
