Quinta do Noval is a historic wine estate located in the Douro Valley of Portugal. The property covers an area of 192 hectares, with vineyards ranging in elevation from 100 to 500 meters above sea level.
The diverse terroir of Quinta do Noval is characterized by a variety of soil types, including schist, granite, and clay-based terra rossa. Schist is the predominant soil type, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the distinctive minerality of the wines.
The estate cultivates a wide range of grape varieties, both traditional Port grapes such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Sousão, as well as unfortified Douro varietals like Viognier, Rabigato, and Códega. This diversity of grape types allows Quinta do Noval to produce a portfolio of complex and age-worthy Port wines and unfortified Douro wines.
In the winemaking process, Quinta do Noval blends traditional and modern techniques. The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a combination of foot treading in traditional granite lagares and temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wines then undergo extended aging, with Vintage Ports spending up to 2 years in seasoned oak casks and Tawny Ports undergoing gradual oxidation and evaporation in smaller wooden vessels over many years.
Quinta do Noval has a long and storied history, having been known for producing acclaimed Port wines since the early 18th century. The estate gained further renown with the declaration of its 1931 Vintage Port and Nacional Vintage Port, establishing it as one of the great Port producers. Since 1993, Quinta do Noval has been part of the AXA Millésimes wine group.
