Domaine Michèle et Patrice Rion’s 2023 vintage is shaping up as a deeply promising follow-up to the domaine’s recent progress, with Maxime Rion firmly in charge and the estate’s much-needed expansion finally underway. Despite the disruption of ongoing winery building work, the cellar remains in capable hands, and the inherited vineyards from Domaine Daniel Rion are now being folded into the domaine’s growing identity.

The growing season delivered a good flowering, heavy bunches, and a late-August heat that concentrated the fruit while naturally reducing yields to around 40–50 hl/ha. Harvest ran from 8 September at Terres Blanches through to 16 September at Bons Bâtons, with healthy grapes, alcohol levels of 12–13%, and acidity remaining in good shape. Maxime used less whole bunch vinification than usual, reserving it mainly for Clos des Argillières, Clos St-Marc, and Chambolle Charmes, while the rest was fully destemmed.

The Côte de Nuits appears to have handled 2023 particularly well, with less heat stress than further south and very few wines pushing toward 14.5% alcohol. A mid-September rain offered some welcome de-stressing.

This is a vintage that points to balance, freshness, and strong classical form rather than sheer opulence. The 2023s from Domaine Michèle et Patrice Rion look set to offer precision, healthy fruit, and the domaine’s increasingly assured touch.
