Gaja first gained global recognition in the Piemonte region of northwestern Italy, where it produced powerful, world-class red wines. A pivotal figure was Angelo Gaja, who took the reins in 1970 and focused on showcasing the full potential of the Nebbiolo grape. Under his leadership, Gaja solidified its reputation for stellar Barolo and Barbaresco wines.

Since 1994, they have owned the Pieve Santa Restituta estate, where they craft two celebrated single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino wines: Rennina and Sugarille. In 1996, Angelo Gaja also acquired the prestigious Ca'Marcanda estate in Bolgheri.
