Our team recently welcomed Joe Rorke, Director and Alexa Boulton, Global Ambassador for a focused staff training, offering a closer look into one of Napa Valley’s most site-driven estates.
Created by the Harlan family, Promontory is located in the western hills of Napa Valley. The vineyard sits along a geological fault line, where volcanic, sedimentary and rare uplifted metamorphic soils intersect — an intricate mosaic that can shift from one vine to the next.
To capture this diversity, the estate is divided into over 100 separate vineyard blocks, each farmed individually. Today, the wines are produced from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the focus firmly on expressing the structure, minerality and nuance of the site.
In the cellar, the philosophy remains one of restraint. Maturation takes place in large-format Austrian oak casks by Stockinger, predominantly neutral, allowing the vineyard’s identity to come through with clarity. The result is a style defined by precision and tension — fine, compact tannins, mineral depth, and a lifted, weightless energy.
Featured Wines
*Promontory 2021
Aromas of blackberries and blackcurrants layered with mint, cedar and pine, alongside notes of iodine, tobacco and mushroom. Medium- to full-bodied, with solid, finely structured tannins that frame the wine and melt seamlessly into a core of pure, airy fruit.
*Promontory 2020
Complex aromatics of blackcurrant, black cherry and black olive, with hints of lavender, violet, hazelnut and black tea. Full-bodied with ultra-fine, integrated tannins, revealing layers of forest floor, wet stone, mountain air and dark fruit, carried by a precise, energetic finish.
With limited production and a significant portion allocated directly, Promontory remains quietly positioned among Napa Valley’s most compelling wines — defined not by scale, but by its clarity of place and disciplined expression.
A deeply insightful session that brought us closer to understanding the precision and philosophy behind this remarkable site.
