Wine Tasting — New World vs Old World with Kilikanoon

@kilikanoonwines @vinobuzz

An evening of blind tasting, lively debate, and contrasting expressions — as guests gathered for a blind tasting exploring the distinctions between New World vs Old World expressions across four varietal matchups.

Joined by Travis Fuller of Kilikanoon, the tasting invited guests to navigate each flight without labels, relying purely on structure, aromatic profile, texture, and balance to identify origin and style.

The evening opened with Mort’s Block Riesling 2023, showing vibrant lime zest, floral lift, and striking mineral tension. The Shiraz flights followed with the generous and supple Killerman’s Run Shiraz 2021, before moving into the more structured Covenant Shiraz 2018, layered with dark plum, graphite, mint, and savoury spice. The final flight, Blocks Road Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, revealed notes of cassis, tobacco leaf, dark chocolate, and polished tannins with impressive depth and persistence.

Throughout the evening, conversations moved beyond simply “guessing the wine,” evolving into deeper discussions around climate, élevage, regional identity, and the evolving definitions of Old and New World winemaking.
